Question: What's the difference between morbidity and mortality rate? I've been asked more than a few times about the difference between morbidity and mortality. While they are often mentioned in the same breath, they refer to very different things. Here’s why: Morbidity is the condition of being ill, diseased, or unhealthy. This can include NCD mortality and morbidity. Of 56.9 million global deaths in 2016, 40.5 million, or 71%, were due to noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). A mortality rate is the number of deaths due to a disease divided by the total population. If there are 25 lung cancer deaths in one year in a population of 30,000, then the mortality rate for that population is 83 per 100,000. Mortality rate describes the number of people dying because of a disease in a population. It is expressed in terms of number of deaths per thousand people in a year. So if the population is 100000, and mortality rate is 7.5, it means that 750 deaths took place in the population because of the disease in a year.
