Bio-energy. The palm oil industry is a critical source of energy, both for transportation as well as electricity generation. And it is not simply relying on palm oil to produce energy, but rather, on a number of by-products. Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) of which more than 60 million tonnes is produced every year, Among the generated oil palm biomass, OPF is by far the highest in quantity, accounting for more than 50% of the total biomass generated in the oil palm industries. Therefore, OPF appears to be a very promising source of raw materials in Malaysia. In this context, biomass from oil palm industries appears to be a very promising alternative as a source of raw materials including renewable energy in Malaysia. Thus, this paper aims to present current scenario of biomass in Malaysia covering issues on availability and sustainability of feedstock as well as current and possible utilization of oil palm biomass. On the other hand, presently million of hectares of land in Malaysia is occupied with oil palm plantation generating huge quantities of biomass. In this context, biomass from the oil palm industries appears to be a very promising alternative as a source of raw materials including renewable energy in Malaysia.
At present there is a continuously increasing interest in the utilization of oil palm biomass as a source of clean energy. One of the major interests is hydrogen from oil palm biomass. Hydrogen from biomass is a clean and efficient energy source and is expected to take a significant role in future energy demand due to the raw material availability. In addition to this oil, palm is also a well-known plant for its other sources of renewable energy, for example huge quantities of biomass by-products are developed to produce value added products such as methane gas, bio-plastic, organic acids, bio-compost, ply-wood, activated carbon, and animal feedstock. Lignocellulosic biomass which is produced from the oil palm industries include Incineration of EFB means wasting renewable energy source and heat which
21 Sep 2012 In addition, as of August 2012, eight oil palm biomass energy projects that the palm oil mill effluent is fully utilised to produce renewable energy, Energy Resources Data Book which contains data related to energy such as Biomass is an important source of renewable energy in Thailand and oil palm and wood wastes which yield a total potential of nearly 80 million tons per year.
