Palm Oil Physical Refining Process. Oil physical refining process, also called as oil steam refining. During the degumming section in the palm oil milling plant, the gum will be removed from palm oil by utilizing phosphoric acid or citric acid. Next to bleaching section, the coloring matter and other metal ions will be absorbed or removed. The extracted oil from the palm oil mill is called Crude Palm Oil (CPO). CPO is sent to a refinery where impurities, colors (by bleaching) and odors (by deodorizing) are removed. The refinery would also separate the solid (palm stearin) and liquid (palm olein) fractions of oil to cater to a wide range of uses. Step 1.Palm kernel oil degumming section Degumming with water to remove the easily hydratable phospholipids and metals. Step 2.Palm kernel oil deacidification section Addition of a small amount of phosphoric or citric acid to convert the remaining non-hydralable phospholipids (Ca, Mg salts) into hydratable phospholipids. In part 2, I explained the various stages involved in physical and chemical refining of crude palm oil and differences between the two refining methods. Presented by Professor Abd Karim Alias
